or paste a link

You can either enter a remote URL (e.g. a location where the source file is located) or a local file from your device. If both, an URL and a local file are selected then one of them is ignored.

Only check this if the link points to a video portal and not directly to an audio or video file. Note: YouTube is not supported. What is a MIDI file?

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is not an audio recording but a set of instructions that tells a synthesizer or digital instrument which notes to play, how loud, and for how long. A MIDI file is therefore tiny compared to an MP3 — it contains no sound waves, only note and timing data. This makes MIDI ideal for music editing, transposition, playback on different instruments, and integration with digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as GarageBand, Logic Pro, or Ableton Live.

What is audio-to-MIDI conversion used for?

Converting audio to MIDI lets you extract the musical information embedded in a recording so you can work with it in ways a plain audio file does not allow:

  • Sheet music generation: Import the resulting MIDI into notation software to get a printable score.
  • Remixing and arrangement: Load the MIDI into a DAW and replace the original instrument sound with any virtual instrument.
  • Learning by ear: Slow down complex passages without pitch shift by adjusting MIDI tempo.
  • Transcription aid: Use the MIDI as a rough draft to speed up manual transcription of melodies or chord progressions.

Keep in mind that the quality of the output depends heavily on the source recording. Clean, monophonic melodies (a single instrument or voice) convert most accurately; dense, polyphonic mixes are much harder for automatic transcription algorithms to separate and may yield approximate results.

Supported input formats

The converter accepts a wide range of common audio formats, including MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, FLAC, WMA, AIFF, RA, OPUS, and more. If your file is in a less common container, try converting it to WAV first for best compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is this audio to MIDI converter free?

Yes, it is completely free to use. There is no subscription, no hidden fee, and no account required to convert your audio files.

How accurate is the MIDI output?

Accuracy depends largely on the source audio. Simple, single-instrument recordings — such as a solo piano or unaccompanied melody — tend to produce the best results. Complex, multi-instrument mixes may yield only approximate or rough MIDI data. The tool itself notes the quality can range from good to experimental, but it is always worth trying.

Which audio formats can I upload?

You can upload MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, FLAC, WMA, AIFF, RA, OPUS, and many other common audio formats. For best results, a clean WAV recording is recommended.

What happens to my uploaded file after conversion?

Your uploaded audio file is processed on the server solely to perform the conversion and is then deleted automatically. Files are not stored, shared, or used for any other purpose.

Can I be notified when the conversion is finished?

Yes. If you are logged in to Conversion-Tool.com, you can opt in to receive an email notification once the conversion is complete — useful for larger files that may take a little longer to process.
